It's a Sign of the Times

20th December 2007

Signs and signage experts Hardy Signs of Falcon Close has just fabricated and installed new fascias for leading Burton men’s and woman’s wear retailers, Brigdens, that completes the store’s refurbishment programme. Pedestrians using the High Street have spotted what is claimed to be the largest illuminated folded aluminium fascia of its type in the town measuring 40m by 1m.

Hardy Signs designed the front and rear signage following a two-hour site survey and consultation with Simon Pearson, Managing Director of Brigdens. The leading independent retailer, considered a short-list of potential sign applications with the options narrowed down to stainless steel to reflect its clean cut, sophisticated image.

The outfitting business, established almost 100 years ago, was originally a military tailor and breeche maker and has retained many of those skills and quality of service today.

Apart from Burton, the company has 7 other local stores in Derby, Bakewell, and Stafford that offer wedding dresses and children’s clothing, in addition to leading brands of clothing for men and women.

“This new signage was designed and manufactured in built-up, bright polished stainless steel”, added Hardy Signs’ Managing Director, Nik Hardy, “with LED lights that give an eye-catching, full halo effect to each letter within the complete sign.

The stainless steel lettering is an excellent contrast with the Farrow and Ball 18th century- style Dauphine paint, used as the background to the signs”. The design and colour of the fascia, part of the complete refurbishment of the shop, was long overdue according to Simon Pearson, who pointed out that it was 10 years since the previous improvement project was completed.

A straw poll around the town this week confirmed that modern illuminated signage is growing increasingly popular with care being paid to ensuring that these signs complement existing street frontages, whilst preserving the long-standing commercial nature of Burton.

Hardy Signs interpreted the client’s identity in the development of the signs, using a serif style font that is an adaptation of the familiar Times New Roman design.

Brigdens’ MD Simon Pearson commented, “Effective signage, in full-keeping with our corporate image, linking our traditional approach with a contemporary feel, is important
to this business.

We see these new signs as providing a key part of our communication with our wider audience of customers.

These signs and the full revamp of floor space will build on our appearance as a high quality clothing and friendly, relaxed store”.

The new Brigdens opened for business on Monday 12 November.
