Competition Winners Are Announced

1st October 2008

Hardy Signs Burton’s leading signs and signage company has announced the results of its Summer Photo Competition, ‘Make it a Holiday to Remember’, run from July to September, in conjunction with the Burton Mail.

Seventeen-year old Daniel Armshaw from Horninglow, won First Prize of a £400 Canon
PowerShot G9 Digital Camera, for his photo entitled ‘Nephew and Seagulls’, taken whilst on holiday in Cornwall.

The judges, led by Nik Hardy, commended Daniel’s photograph for its humour, and use of a simple digital camera to capture the moment. Its simplicity made it stand out, they said.

The more than fifty entries covered a wide range of photographic styles, which made selection of the shortlist more difficult. Judges thought few entrants had used photo enhancement techniques, preferring to compose their photos in the viewfinder or live-view for a ‘more natural image’.

Second prize of a Canon Selphy Photo Printer went to Jessica Woodward, aged 16, from Woodville, who attends Burton College. She entered her photo of Burghead, takenon holiday this July in Scotland.

“We spotted that many entrants had visited our new web site at www.hardysigns.co.uk and looked at our canvas art pages”, said Design Manager, Adam Bates.

“The composition of digital photos for canvas art takes on greater importance. Generally speaking larger size prints need more care when they are composed, in order to effectively appear on canvas. We have some advice and examples on our web site, and this proved particularly useful to the entrants”.

With two entries vying for second prize and the judges unable to decide between the two photos, Hardy Signs has awarded a special Third Prize of a 40 by 30 inch canvas art print to Christopher Hunter, aged 16, from Etwall, who attends John Port School.

He entered ‘Fireworks’ taken at Universal Studios, using the 35mm format and turning his camera at an unusual angle to capture the full height of the display.

“Digital photos and canvas art make great partners”, added Nik Hardy.

“With a range of different canvas art sizes and materials, we transform a high resolution photo into a full work of art. Many amateur photographers like to see their images enlarged right up to 40 by 30 inch prints; their full impact comes out at that size”.

Canvas art produced by the sign company are real works of art that can take pride of place in the home and even the office. They make excellent gifts for celebrations and special occasions.

More information about the Hardy Signs range of canvas art can be found on their web site at www.hardysigns.co.uk, or by calling the company on 01283 569 102 and asking for Adam Bates.
